John Winn is the general counsel and chief compliance officer of UVIMCO, with responsibility for the legal and compliance functions of the organization. He also oversees UVIMCO’s operational due diligence function and works closely with members of the investment and operations teams in evaluating external investment managers across all asset classes in the UVIMCO portfolio.  Mr. Winn joined UVIMCO in July 2013.

Prior to joining UVIMCO, Mr. Winn practiced law for eight years at Cooley LLP, where he focused on the representation of alternative investment funds, including hedge, private equity, venture capital, and fund-of-funds, in connection with their formation, operation, investment, and compliance activities.  His practice also included matters of general corporate, securities and tax law. Mr. Winn previously worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant, where he specialized in matters before the House Financial Services Committee, and as an economics consultant with Ernst & Young, where he advised clients on a variety of tax and business strategy issues.

Mr. Winn holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif, and a B.A. in economics and public policy studies, summa cum laude, from Duke University.  He is a registered corporate counsel with the Virginia State Bar and a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
